  • You've been in the same job for years or recently lost it and are now considering a computing program. But where do you begin? The unfamiliar landscape can feel overwhelming.
  • You’ve started your computing program, but the connection between your learning and the actual skills and roles in the industry is unclear. How do these courses translate into a real job?
  • You’ve enrolled in a computing program but don’t know how to succeed.
  • You have a strong skill set from your previous career, but how do these skills transfer into the tech world? You feel stuck, unsure of how to make your experience relevant.
  • The options are endless—boot camps, certifications, degrees—but which is right for you? The choices are confusing, and the path forward seems uncertain.
  • Your family doesn’t know how to support you on this journey.

These struggles leave many aspiring tech professionals feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about their future, wondering if they’ve made the right choice. For women, the challenges are often compounded by navigating a male-dominated industry that can feel intimidating and isolating. Families, too, find it challenging to provide the support their children need to succeed in this complex field.

This is exactly why the Tech Academy was started—to provide a clear roadmap and support system that addresses these challenges and helps aspiring tech professionals achieve long-term success

Struggles of Aspiring Computing Professionals

Many aspiring tech professionals—whether career changers, high schoolers, or current computing students—find themselves overwhelmed and disillusioned. They invest significant time and resources into a computing program, only to realize it’s not what they expected. Some choose these programs without understanding the roles they lead to, feeling lost and uncertain about their future. Families also struggle to support their children, unsure how to guide them. From my 20-plus years of interacting with families, career changers, and computing students, I’ve observed these everyday struggles:

Meet Dr. Rose Shumba

Hi! I'm Dr. Rose Shumba, a mentor with over 20 years of experience in academia and the tech industry, including time as a software engineer at a leading high-tech company. My journey in tech began in 6th grade, inspired by a supportive teacher who sparked my passion for mentoring.

I’ve been where you are—I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges of being a computing student. This experience and advanced degrees from the University of Manchester (Victoria) and the University of Birmingham have equipped me with a deep understanding of the tech landscape. Throughout my career, I've guided hundreds of students to secure positions at top tech companies like Microsoft and Adobe. My innovative internship program, recognized in the New York Times, has been instrumental in transforming academic experiences into successful tech careers.

As a mother of two successful tech professionals, I understand families' challenges in navigating the tech industry. These personal and professional experiences inspired me to create the Tech Academy, a comprehensive solution to help students and families avoid common pitfalls and achieve long-term success in the tech industry.

My students know that my enthusiasm for computing is matched only by my dedication to mentoring, which I consider my true calling.

The Birth of the Academy

Many aspiring tech professionals—whether career changers, high schoolers, or current computing students—find themselves overwhelmed and disillusioned. They invest significant time and resources into a computing program, only to realize it’s not what they expected. Some choose these programs without fully understanding the roles they lead to, leaving them feeling lost and uncertain about their future. Families also struggle to support their children, unsure of how to guide them through this complex journey.

The Tech Academy was born out of these challenges. From my 20-plus years of experience interacting with families, career changers, and students, I’ve seen these common struggles time and time again. As a former computing student and now an experienced professional, I’ve witnessed firsthand the frustration of students wasting time and resources on the wrong path, only to drop out in disappointment. I’ve also experienced, as a woman, the struggle to succeed in the tech field, and I’ve seen other women face similar challenges—eager to break into tech but unsure how to navigate a male-dominated industry. This confusion and lack of clear guidance often leave women feeling stuck and overwhelmed.

Over the years, I’ve engaged with countless families and career changers facing these obstacles. The confusion, frustration, and lack of direction inspired me to create a comprehensive solution.

The Tech Academy provides a clear roadmap for students, women, and families, offering invaluable insights and guidance on how to avoid common pitfalls and achieve long-term success in the tech industry. It’s more than just a course; it’s a structured program designed to empower individuals to make informed decisions, align their education with their goals, and ultimately build a successful career in tech.

A Message From Dr. Rose Shumba

I believe wholeheartedly that you and your dreams matter. You were designed with a purpose and are meant to live a life of significance, impact, and joy.

Like many of you, I felt lonely and discouraged in my tech journey. There were moments when I wanted to give up—especially as a woman of color navigating a field that often feels isolating. But I learned to speak up for myself, to connect with faculty members and other students, and to see the value of joining student groups. Those lessons shaped not just my career, but my confidence and sense of belonging.

Mentoring is my passion—it’s truly my calling. I’ve learned that when people are given the chance and the right guidance, they can achieve remarkable things. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). I believe that with the right support, we can all find our unique path to success.

The key to a fulfilling life is knowing who you are, understanding what truly drives you, and living in a genuine way—no matter what others expect. Whether in life or your computing career, success and fulfillment comes from embracing your own path. And I’m here to help you do just that!
